Invisible Holiday Traditions At Americas Landmark Resort

San Diegos stunningly beautiful Victorian Hotel del Coronado numbers among American historic landmarks. Presidents and royalty have stayed at the Del: and, during the summer and Christmas holidays, families book rooms and meal reservations for years in advance. Eduardo Ramirez, Senior worked at the Hotel del Coronado for more than sixty years, grudgingly retiring from his position as a chef only after his third heart attack made more work physically impossible. Eduardo, Senior worked every Christmas for more than sixty years, preparing sumptuous holiday feats for hundreds of American families while la senora Ramirez made exquisite holiday foods for the family at home.

This year, the tradition persists, but it has evolved. This year, Eduardito, Little Eddie, a full-time student at Harvard, will fly home to take his fathers place in Hotel del Coronados sprawling kitchens. This year, the Ramirez family will dine with the Dels guests, sharing holiday cheer and tidings of great joy. Next year, Little Eddie will attend medical school.

All those years, Eddie says, I resented my father being away from home on Christmas Day. The other kids had their fathers home, and mine had to work. The way I saw it, my father was killing himself to wait on all the rich people. Now, though, I see what has happened because of all mi padres hard work. I feel humbled and very grateful.

Across North America, Europe, and Australia, hundreds of thousands of seasonal workers seize Christmas opportunities to improve their own and their families conditions. Especially in catering and the hospitality industries, as some families travel over the river and through the woods to grandmothers house, many families go to work serving them.

Eddie recites a few staggering statistics about the Hotel del Coronado, implying that they generalize to fine dining facilities around the Christian world. Christmas in hospitality restaurants and catering probably is the equivalent of Black Friday in retail, he says. In our biggest dining room, we have 350 tables; 90% of them will seat twelve people. All of those tables will turn over a dozen times on Christmas Day. That translates to more than 4200 meals. At an average of $75(US) per diner, the Hotel takes-in $315, 000. Computing the decimal points, Eddie shows why he will go to medical school. Servers, therefore, make a cool $50,000 among them.

His breathing issuing through his lips, Eddie concludes, Yeah, I would say its worth it. My education is the proof.

Consuelita Rodriguez, a UCLA undergraduate and a third-generation Del worker, wholeheartedly agrees. Pointing to the skating pond, Christmas carolers in their Victorian garb, and seventy-degree sunshine bathing the Pacific Ocean, Isnt it the best of all worlds? she asks rhetorically. I will bring my family for Christmas, she declares, changing a queen-sized bed in record time. My grandmother and mother did this so that I could have UCLA. I do it, in part, for my daughters yet to come. Pausing a moment, she adds, It just would not be Christmas if I were not here. Holding a healthy bundle of bills, Suela says wistfully, These tips represent my futureand my familys, she emphasizes.

Sandals Resorts In Key Caribbean Holiday Destinations Reap The Rewards Of Earthcheck Programme

The Sandals Resorts brand has built itself a sterling reputation over the years and has long been synonymous with luxurious Caribbean holidays. Management at Sandals have proven that they are not satisfied to rest on their laurels as they continue to raise the standards they have set for themselves. Most notably, over the course of the past 12 months Sandals have been hard at work building an equally stellar reputation in the field of eco-friendly tourism.

A year ago Sandals announced the launch of their environmental management programme across all their Caribbean hotels and resorts with the Sandals Earthguard powered by EarthCheck.

Since then, the Sandals chain of resorts have reportedly come a long way with their flagship hotel the Sandals Royal Bahamian recently receiving a silver rating by EarthCheck while the Sandals Negril, one of the most popular with travellers booking luxury Caribbean holidays, has proudly maintained its platinum status previously acquired in 2008 under the groups former certification body, Green Globe.

Under the EarthCheck programme, Sandals have identified six key pillars necessary to reduce their environmental impact and improve their green credentials:

Staff Awareness
Energy Management
Waste Management
Control of Hazardous Substances
Social and Cultural Development
Water Conservation

Sandals work in the area of water management and water conservation has been particularly impressive given the number of travellers who stay at the many Sandals resorts during their holidays in the Caribbean and the demands that such a high level of occupancy places on water supplies. Across all Sandals Resorts water from ice machines are recycled and used for irrigation, while the Sandals resorts in Ocho Rios, Jamaica has been harvesting well water to reduce its reliance on municipal supplies.

EarthCheck CEO Steward Moore stated the following of Sandals achievements, This achievement highlights the long term commitment that Sandals Resorts has shown to the communities and environment of the Caribbean. Theyre well ahead of most governments and industry players globally as a result of their efforts, and serve as a leader in the field of sustainable practices.”

Castleburn Mountain Resort – What’s All The Rage

Castleburn resort began as a bare farm in the Underberg region with caravan and outhouse as the only dwelling in 1983. Today it is a luxury mountain resort in the Magic Breakaways Leisure resorts portfolio. The Garden Castle mountain which overlooks the farm and the Scottish name for a small stream a burn are what gave the name to the farm:-Castleburn. Earning their living from the construction trade and smaller farming operations, the Barnett family were the original owners of the land. They dreamed of building a lake with cottages on its shores, both overlooked by their own home higher up in the valley.

The construction of an earthen dam wall as well as a clubhouse and 4 cottages began in 1991, probably a year that the Barnetts remember very well as being the start of their dreams manifesting. One could say that a degree of divine intervention was experienced at Castleburn when the rains filled the lake shortly after completion at the end of 1991.

2 years later, Dave Barnett and Peter Foaden from Magic Breakaways met and created a winning relationship resulting in large scale development at Castleburn. Magic Breakaways operates in the resort development area of the Legacy Group of companies a large African corporation and a leader in the hospitality industry.

Indeed the relationship proved to be a winner and Castleburn is now home to 58 units comprising: 4 Luxury chalets with Jacuzzi bath; 6 single bedroom apartments; 22 chalets with three bedrooms; 4 luxury chalets accommodating 8 guests

Climate in the region is moderate with cool winters and warm summers. The coldest months are April through September with the lowest temperatures dropping to 2 degrees Celsius in winter mornings and highs peaking at 26 degrees during December. The resort is located at the foothills of the Southern Drakensburg, making it witness to beautiful snow-capped mountains and visitors; witness to many a moment to be savoured with family and / or loved ones in the regions peace. All chalets are equipped with heating systems as well as stone fireplaces for the colder months.

Trout fisherman and nature enthusiasts will be in their element at Castleburn however, the resort has many more activities to offer as well. The resort and a Natal Parks Board nature reserve share a border; it is also host to Lake Madingofani (formerly Castleburn Lake) and 7 smaller dams forming the major attraction of the resort. Rainbow, triploid and brown trout are the three main species of trout abundant in Lake Madingofani. The dams are continually restocked and so a disappointed fly-fisherman is an uncommon occurrence.

Other activities available will cater for all and include hiking, rowing, canoeing, sailing, squash, guided horse trail, volleyball court, two walks in the grounds, swimming in a rock-hewn swimming pool, trampolines, outdoor chess, tennis court and children’s playground. If one’s idea of true relaxation does not involve physical exertion the resort is equipped with a health and beauty salon as well as restaurants and cocktail bar, putt-putt and even a recreation centre with darts and pool. Of course the chalets and apartments are kitted out with other indulgent conveniences such as satellite television and comfortable patios inviting al fresco meals and quiet times against a fabric of majestic mountain ranges.

For bird-watching enthusiasts will find themselves busy enough with over a hundred species of bird to be seen. Birds are not the only creatures vying for attention in telescopic vision, Reedbuck and Eland as well as Bush buck, Duiker and jackals also find themselves commonly spotted.

In the class of relaxation destinations, Castleburn is easily the most understated and I implore all readers to consider it as a timeshare or fractional ownership prospect. Castleburn resort has a Four Star Gold Crown rating, thanks to the many skills and experience which Legacy has brought to its offering.
